The Structure of Mission for the Demarcated Region of Douro, in dependence of the Minister for Environment, Spatial Planning and Regional Development, is in charge of improvement actions for the integrated development of Douro’s Region and to promote the articulation between entities of the central and local administration with competences in the region, as well as stimulate the participation and initiative of the civil society. Created by the Resolution of the Minister Council nr 116/2006, the Structure of Mission ends to form a rational centre of the public action in the 21 municipalities that integrate the Demarcated Region of Douro and to form an articulation platform between entities that should promote partnerships, coordinate, stimulate and supervise important projects of regional, territorial, economical and social development.

Consequently the Structure of Mission has the responsibility to coordinate the development of programmes and public projects in the region and to ensure the execution of the competences previewed in the Intermunicipality Plan of the Spatial Planning of the Alto Douro Wine Region and in the classification attributed by UNESCO, on the 21st of December 2001, as World Heritage for being a continuing, organically evolved cultural landscape with the aim of protect the landscape, environmental and cultural values. The Structure of Mission is also in charge of developing partnership with and between the municipalities, companies, research centres, training institutes or other entities in order to an economic valuation of the territory and the increase of competitiveness and territorial cohesion in the region.

The Structure of Mission includes on its competences the collaboration with the Portuguese Tourism Institute, in order to the execution of the Plan of Tourism Development for Douro Valley, the cooperation with entities of wine sector to develop Douro and Porto wines, to take full advantage of the Douro navigability competence, in the context of the promotion of an adequate transports network, and the development of promotion and valuation of the brand “Douro” in benefit of the regional development.
